His Life
The Neuro Visual Institute honors the life and enduring contributions of Dr. Jim Ellis, O.D., our beloved founder and a true pioneer in neuro-visual health. Dr. Ellis was also an adventurous spirit.
An avid racecar driver, he competed in renowned events like the Mille Miglia in Italy and the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, embodying the same drive and energy he brought to his work.
He was loved by his family, long-time partner, Shari Hettesheimer; his sons, James Knight Ellis IV and Justin Robert Ellis; and his grandsons, Justin Alexander Ellis and Asher Matthew Ellis-Liberman.


His Passion
For over four decades, Dr. Ellis dedicated his professional life to advancing optometry and was instrumental in advancing concussion and neuro-visual research.
Dr. Ellis joined UC Athletics in 1979 as the team optometrist UC Athletics, he and his family established the endowed Student Athletic Trainer Scholarship in 1987, ensuring lasting support for students in the College of Allied Health Sciences' Athletic Training program. His legacy within UC was further cemented in 2021 when he received the inaugural Bob Goin Service Award, recognizing his exceptional dedication and service to the university.
In the 1980s, he co-founded LensCrafters, reshaping the optical retail industry and making quality eyewear more accessible.
His Legacy
His passion for neuro visual health led him to establish the Neuro Visual Institute, where we specialize in rehabilitation for TBI, concussion, and stroke survivors, as well as helping students overcome learning-related visual challenges. This institute stands as a testament to Dr. Ellis’s enduring commitment to improving lives through innovative care.
His innovative approach and compassionate service touched countless lives, leaving a legacy that will continue to shape our field for years to come.
